The BugWorld Experience launches new programme
The BugWorld Experience, based at Liverpool’s Albert Dock, has recruited qualified teacher Rachel Taphouse, as its new Education Officer, to develop a range of learning aids which relate directly to the National Curriculum. The BugWorld Experience is the UK’s first Insectarium. As part of the school visits, pupils will be guided through seven different environments, including a rainforest, savannah and the everyday British home, and will see, find out about and even interact with the bugs that inhabit them, all with the help of a team of trained guides. Rachel, a former primary school teacher who will work with schools to develop tailored lesson plans to suit their individual needs, said: “The BugWorld Experience is a fantastic resource for teachers. We will offer bespoke school-based programmes and lesson plans, plus the benefits of a fully interactive onsite classroom.” The new programmes, which will be available from September 2009, will not only enhance the teaching of science, but can also be used to teach subjects such as literacy, numeracy, art and even citizenship. Children will use exciting new technology to answer questions via individual handsets which produce a print out with feedback for teachers to take away with them. This information can then be used back in the classroom at school and also as part of the BugWorld Experience’s outreach programme to test how much the children learnt during their visit. Demonstrating its commitment to the sector, the investor behind the BugWorld Experience, Rogers Investment Group (RGI), will be looking to secure a quality badge status and other key education awards – a requirement not essential for a visitor attraction.
